Effective October 19, 2026
Short version: your memories stay on your device, or in your own Google Drive if you turn on backup. We never see your photos, videos or notes. The free version shows a small, non-personalized ad on two screens; Premium has no ads.
What the app stores
When you save a memory, Memento keeps a copy of the photos and videos you chose, plus any title, note and date you add. This is stored only inside the app's private storage on your device. Memento has no accounts and no server of its own, so your memories are never uploaded by us.
Advertising (free version only)
The free version shows one banner ad at the bottom of the Home and board screens, provided by Google AdMob. Ads never appear while you capture or view a memory, and ad providers never receive your photos, videos or notes.
- Memento requests non-personalized ads only: ads are not based on your interests or browsing history.
- Google AdMob may still collect limited device data (such as the advertising ID, IP address and app interaction data) for ad delivery, frequency capping, fraud prevention and measurement, as described in Google's advertising policies.
- In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, Memento asks for your consent choices (via Google's consent tool) before any ad is requested. You can change them later in Settings → Ad privacy choices.
- Upgrading to Premium removes ads and the ad SDK stops requesting ads.
Google Drive backup (optional, Premium)
If you turn on Google Drive backup, you sign in with Google and Memento uploads a backup of your memories (photos, videos, notes and the collection index) to a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive (Google's drive.appdata permission). Memento can only see that folder, not the rest of your Drive. We have no server and never receive your backups or your Google account data; your email is only stored on your phone to show which account is connected.
- Backups run weekly on Wi-Fi while the app is open, and when you tap "Back up now". Only the newest complete backup is kept.
- Settings → Disconnect Google Drive stops backups, removes Memento's access, and can delete the backups from your Drive.
- You can also remove Memento's access anytime at myaccount.google.com → Security → Third-party connections.
Crash reports and usage statistics
Release versions of Memento send two kinds of technical data so we can fix problems and know how many people use the app:
- Crash reports (Sentry): when the app hits an error, the error message, where in the code it happened, your device model, OS version and app version. No screenshots, no record of what you were doing, and never your photos, videos or notes.
- Usage count (PostHog): an "app opened" event with a random ID created for this installation. It contains none of your memories and is not linked to your name, email or advertising ID. PostHog's IP-based location lookup is turned off. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, Memento does not send this usage count at all.
Sentry (Functional Software, Inc., USA) and PostHog (PostHog Inc., USA) process this data only on our behalf. It is encrypted in transit.
